Full Auto foundry is an open source, workshop-based type foundry that explores how automation can influence the creation and methodology of type design and typefaces, in both the analogue and digital. The analogue, pen and paper side of sketching letters is automated to an extent through various drawing tools, often in the form of stencils or tracing tables. As the drawing tools come with defined shapes and forms it is the task of the drawer to follow those shapes until a letter emerges on the paper. This can either be done through the repetition of one shape drawn over and over, or through the combination of many different shapes. The idea is that a typeface can be sketched without thinking too much about it, either through fast paced sketching or slow methodical drawing something will emerge, hopefully a letter. The digital side of type design is also automated. Using a machine and a series of scripts the drawings that the participants draw are scanned and digitised into fully working typefaces. The typefaces are then immediately, and automatically, uploaded to the foundry’s website where they can be downloaded and used by anyone. The foundry is an exploration into how it would be possible to open up type design to non-type designers and also an investigation into tempo of letter making and how the tools we use to draw can influence the outcomes of what we create.
