grapho
2023

Grapho originates from a work by Inna Kochkina that researches writing methods through the relation of the body and the inking roll. The term ‘Grapho’ means to write, with reference to the form of the letters; to form letters on material. Kochkina challenged her handwriting by making large-scale letters with the inking roll. The process developed into questioning possible and comfortable movements of her hand and her body. Connecting strokes with one another, was the main focus of her investigation. The curves in the letters are the result of a continuous movement. Once Inna Kochkina decided to turn letters into the digital font new questions appeared. How to translate the beauty of analog forms and textures into a digital font? Leaving the textures to their analog origin she decided to focus on the monotone’s complexity that allows forming letters into irregular connections and line continuance. This can be typeset through the font’s OpenType features. Grapho is intended to be used for both digital and print media, allowing users to explore various possibilities. In addition to the typeface, Grapho also includes a variety of alternate characters, and ligatures—as well as analog letters that can be provided upon request.
